Soundwalking

Midtown is unlike any other neighborhood because it truly reflects the busy hustle and bustle that every New Yorker experiences. I walked around Midtown around 12, meaning everyone and their co-worker was out to lunch. The streets were packed to a brim, everyone was walking and talking at the same time, cars and buses were driving by-screeching and honking, everything combined created a loud movement that seemed to shake the ground beneath me.

As I walked by some distinct sounds were caused by the groups of people that walked by. One group of three businessmen walked by discussing details of a party they recently went to. Another businesswoman crossed the street screaming in Russian to whoever she was talking on the phone to. The cars, trucks, buses, and taxis on the street seemed to be in one giant argument with each other as they raced down Madison Avenue and continuously honked. The hum of the old engines as the busses stopped vibrated down the street and the sirens from the police cars was loud enough to distract everyone, even if it was just for a moment.

For a moment, I sat down at a food store called Essn’ the place was relatively big but the number of people in it made it seem much smaller. The deli/restaurant was broken into many different sections. I could hear the crinkling from the plastic food boxes as people picked them up to begin piling their food, the metal against metal scrape from the food and the tray, and the question, “what are you going to get” from the pair standing next to me. The workers were constantly moving grazing their spatulas against the grill or chopping food against the counter tops. There were people shouting their orders to be heard over the sound of the overall loud murmur that surrounded the room and there was the sound of paper wrapping around sandwiches, and the crackle of plastic bags as people walked out.
