The Girl Extra Credit

The Girl directed by David Riker is a provocative film that provides a new look on immigration compared to what is commonly portrayed in the media. The film centers around an Anglo-American woman, Ashley, from the south who is having a difficult time in her life. Her son was taken away from her and she is unwilling to change her ways. In the movie, she believes that all she needs is money in order for her life to get better, but the truth is she just needs to change her ways. This mirrors the attitudes of many immigrants because they believe once they come to America they would make more money and have a better life. Ashley then attempts to smuggle people across the border to America to make money. Her plan goes awry when several of the people drown while crossing a river including the mother of a very young child. The scene begins with an extreme close up, focusing on Jordana’s face from the neck up, cutting off the top of her head and then the sides of her hair. After that short scene, Oliver is seen walking across from Jordana in a medium shot trying to make eye contact with her figure. The use of the parallel lines in this scene constantly draws your eyes to follow Oliver’s movements. It is then followed by a wide shot of Oliver walking across from her under the bridge, and then a medium shot of him walking up to Jordana from behind. The camera then flips around on Oliver where it goes from a medium shot to a close up on each of the character’s faces from the shoulders up. This is followed by an extreme close up on Jordana’s hands holding the cigarette and then on her eyes, followed by close up shot of Oliver looking terrified and then again to Jordana looking confident.
